Opening Prayer Led by Group Facilitator

Psalm 3

Pray the Psalm together aloud, alternating verses between two sides.  When finished, share reflections on the Psalm as a group

1  O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me;

2  many are saying of me, there is no help for him in God.

3  But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.

4  I cry aloud to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain.

5  I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.

6  I am not afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me round about.

7  Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek, you break the teeth of the wicked.

8  Deliverance belongs to the Lord; your blessing be upon your people!

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

Moses in the Wilderness

Exodus 2:11-25

1.       Why does Abraham leave the land where he was raised (Gen 12)? Why does Jacob (Gen 27 & 28)? Why does Moses? How far have you gone from the land where you were raised? For what reasons might a Patriarch leave home?

2.       Whom does Abraham’s servant meet at the well (Gen 24)? Whom does Jacob meet at the well (Gen 29)? Whom does Moses meet at the well? How does this inform your understanding of John 4? Where did you meet your wife?

3.       Moses says, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.” Who calls himself a “sojourner” in Genesis (Gen 23)? How is the Jewish experience connected to being a “sojourner”? How is a Christian a “sojourner”? How does being a “sojourner” affect the way a father leads a family?

4.       What was the employment of Abel, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? What is Moses’ employment? How does this employment prepare for leadership? What kind of experience prepares a Patriarch for leadership of family? Of other men?
